Sponsor a dog

The list of dogs below is a list of all the dogs currently at the shelter.   We do try to update this list when we can, but sometimes new rescues might not yet be on the list.

The sponsor program is a a co-sponsor program where ALL the funds donated in this program, go towards feedings costs of ALL the animals at the shelter as well as towards the daily feeding runs RSDR have set up for animals living on the streets.

As a thank you for contributing monthly to the shelters food costs, we ask you to choose which animals photo you would like, and we will send you a photo of that animal to you each month.

Please choose the dog of your choice from the list below and go to our Sponsor Page to sign up by Paypal.

1284 Victor

On the 29th October 2016, the boys noticed that a dog had been tied to a barbed wire fence near the shelter. They were unsure if she was a hunter’s dog and they were coming back for her. They put food and water next to her before they left the shelter. Later that evening she was still there so it was obvious she had been dumped and Tony went and took her in. Barbie gave birth to a litter of pups on the 9th November 2016.  Victor is one of the pups.

1277 Nala

Around the 4th November 2016, a mother dog gave birth under someone’s balcony in Smolian.  Someone that the boys know had been looking out for them and feeding them but people aren’t very nice towards dogs in the neighbourhood so he asked if we would take them.  They were brought to the shelter on the 17th December. Nala is one of the pups.

1266 Quinn

Three pups were rescued with their mother. The mother dog had been thrown out by someone and had hidden away to give birth. We had seen her around and fed her and she is very friendly. We couldn’t take her until we could find where her pups were.  On December 13th 2016, we found Clover's three pups and took mum and pups to the shelter. Quinn is one of the pups.

clover was born around November 2014

1262 Kotsi

Kotsi arrived at the shelter on the 11th December 2016. He was in another town and was very thin with an injured back leg. Kotsi is a very friendly and loving boy and wasn't surviving well on the streets. He was named Kotsi by one of our supporters, after one of the lads who works at the shelter

1261 Holly

On the 10th December 2016,  Lulah and her pup Holly were brought to the shelter. We were told that Lulah is a street dog and was getting on people's nerves. Lulah is an older dog and we suspect she must have been someone's dog and they have chased her away.  Holly was about 3 months when brought to the shelter with her mum.
1260 Lulah
On the 10th December 2016,  Lulah and her pup Holly were brought to the shelter. We were told that Lulah is a street dog and was getting on people's nerves. Lulah is an older dog and we suspect she must have been someone's dog and they have chased her away.

1255 Suzi

Suzi was a street dog. We had known about her for years and taken in two litters of her pups after she had left them. She was very nervous of people though so we hadn’t been able to catch her. A couple of girls in the town had been feeding her and she had become to trust them. On the 2nd December we caught Suzi and her four pups and took them to the shelter. The girls who had been feeding her were upset at first but now understand that it is better and safer for Suzi and pups to be at the shelter and they have been to visit them. Suzi was born in 2012.
1254 Mama Dog

Mama dog was born around 2013 and is a feral dog who lived in the forest for years but came to our gate every day for food. It took years to build up the trust with her so that we could stroke and catch her. So many times we have gone hunting to find where she has had pups. In December 2016 we caught her and she was taken to the shelter and will be spayed.
1253 Vicky

On the 29/11/2016 The boys noticed that a dog had been tied to a barbed wire fence near the shelter. They were unsure if she was a hunter’s dog and they were coming back for her. They put food and water next to her before they left the shelter. Later that evening she was still there so it was obvious she had been dumped and Tony went and took her in. Barbie gave birth on the 9/11/2016 and Vicky is one of her pups.
1247 Pippa
On the 20th November 2016, a man brought Pippa to the shelter and said she had been hit by a car. She appeared to be paralysed so we suspected her back was broken. On the 24th November 2016 she went to the vets and it was confirmed that her back is broken. Pippa was very weak and not eating or drinking and the vets said she is fighting off an infection. The initial priority is to help her get over the infection and get her to start eating and drinking.
1244 Taz
On the 4th November 2016, Liam and Rumen found Taz on the way back from the vets in Plovdiv. They stopped somewhere to get water and he went up to them wagging his tail.  Taz is a husky cross and would have been born around October 2014
1243 Autumn
On the 1st November 2016, Liam found Autumn lay down in some bushes on a mountain road. It was dark and he wouldn't have noticed her if he hadn't heard a little whimper. Autumn made no attempt to move even when Liam carried her to the car. She is a young girl and was born around December 2015. Autumn is very scared and seems to be in a constant state of helpless apathy. She is terrified what is going to happen or be done to her but doesn't have it in her to fight or flee. She is at the house and she is at least eating and drinking.
1237 Maia
On the 31/10/2016 we were asked to take Maia and her four pups. Maia is quite underweight  but she had been cared for as the previous owners had a vaccination record for her. Her four pups Troy, Striker, Dana and Piper all appeared healthy.
1236 Barbie
On the 29th October, 2016, the boys noticed that a dog had been tied to a barbed wire fence near the shelter. They were unsure if she was a hunter’s dog and they were coming back for her. They put food and water next to her before they left the shelter. Later that evening she was still there so it was obvious she had been dumped and Tony went and took her in. She was scared but friendly and looks to be pregnant.
1225 Charlie

Someone from Pernik contacted Liam and asked if we would take Charlie. Charlie is paralysed and we were told he has two broken vertebrae. He had been taken to a vet who advised he was put to sleep. The people who found him didn’t want that so we told them if they took him to Provets we would get a second opinion and if he could be treated or helped we would do that. We collected him from provets on the 23rd October 2016. They confirmed that his back was broken in two places. We tried Charlie in a wheelchair that we have and he took to it very well. He was happy going about the yard in it. One of our UK adopters has kindly offered to pay for a new wheelchair for Charlie as the one we have is too big for him.
1227 Jasper
On the 8th October 2016, a female dog (Topaz) was left outside the shelter after we explained we had no room. On the 12th October she gave birth. Jasper is one of the pups.
1224 Bouncer
On the 22nd October 2016 we were at the municipality shelter in Kardzhali, collecting two other dogs we had been asked to take. We spotted Bouncer trembling at the back of his pen. Nothing was known about him and we were told he had only been there a couple of days. After talking to him for a while, he came forward and was pressing his face against the wire to be stroked. Bouncer had bad open wounds on both his front legs, his back leg, another wound on top of his head and one at the side of his muzzle. There were other wounds all at different stages of healing. Knowing that he wouldn't survive the conditions there, we decided to take him back to our shelter.
1223 Willow
We were asked by someone if we would rescue Willow from the municipality shelter in Kardzhali. Someone had been treating her for a skin problem before she was caught from the streets and taken there. Knowing that she wouldn't get any treatment there and wouldn't survive the conditions, they asked us to take her. We collected Willow on the 22nd October 2016. She was so scared that she was threatening to bite and was cowering at the back of the pen. Once we got her out, we reassured her and she then made no attempt to bite. Willow has sore patches and a bad skin problem and is also extremely thin. She has a very severe eye infection which has gone untreated so we are unsure yet as to whether or not her sight can be saved.
1222 Hattie
On the 22nd October 2016, we collected Hattie from the municipality shelter in Karzhali. We had been asked a couple of days before if we would take her as she would have most likely died there. Hattie had bald patches, a matted coat, sores which were bleeding and couldn't stop scratching. She was also very thin. Hattie is a friendly girl. Once back at our shelter, she had a good meal then settled down on her new soft bed.
1221 Jamie
Liam found Jamie on the 21st October 2016. He was in Plovdiv having taken animals to the vets and he saw Jamie, a street dog who had been ear tagged. Jamie attached himself to Liam and wouldn't leave his side so Liam didn't want to leave him on the streets.
1220 Sable

On the 19th October 2016, Liam and Rumen were taking animals to the vets in Plovdiv. They spotted three very young pups, at the side of a very busy road. Che 1203

On the 8th October 2016, Kristofer called us in the evening to say he had found a box of tiny pups by the bins in the village near the shelter. It was dark and if the pups hadn't got out and been killed on the roads, they would most likely have been killed by foxes. The pups were very young having been born around the 4th September. We took them back to the shelter and they were treated for fleas and worms and given puppy milk and soft food.

Luna 1198

On the 8th October 2016, Kristofer called us in the evening to say he had found a box of tiny pups by the bins in the village near the shelter. It was dark and if the pups hadn't got out and been killed on the roads, they would most likely have been killed by foxes. The pups were very young having been born around the 4th September. We took them back to the shelter and they were treated for fleas and worms and given puppy milk and soft food.
1196 Topaz
On the 8th October 2016,  a lady from Smolian turned up at the shelter asking us to take a pregnant street dog. The boys explained to her that we cannot take any more dogs at the moment but she refused to accept it. When it started to rain she got in her car and left and the boys later found the dog near the shelter gates. Topaz is a very friendly and sweet girl who walks well on a lead which doesn't exactly fit in with her having been a street dog. She is heavily pregnant so we have to be prepared that she could give birth at any time.
1195 Romeo
On the 6th October 2016, Liam and the boys spotted Romeo alone on a verge, when they were on their way to work. Romeo was timid but friendly so had probably been dumped by someone. He was born some time in August 2016.

1194 Vedder

On the 5th October 2016, a man brought Vedder to the shelter after having found him on the roads. Vedder would have been  born some time  in August 2016.

1159 Kalani

On the 16th September 2016, we were told that there was a mother dog with broken front legs, who was at a remote picnic hut a couple of hours away. We were sent pictures of the pup that was with her. The pup appeared to be quite large and looked healthy on the pictures. When we got there we found Kalani who was unable to walk properly, extremely thin and both eyes were infected. She still had large open wounds on her legs. There was no sign of the pup. We searched and waited but still no sign. We suspect that someone has possibly taken the pup in but we  asked someone to do regular checks and inform us if the pup turns up. on. Kalani was taken to the shelter. Her legs were a mess and she had to be carried in and out. A few days later she went to the vets and they kept her in. Both her front paws are badly smashed and one leg. Her injuries were about two months old so her bones would have to be re-broken. Kalani has now started a series of operations to try and repair the damage so that she can walk again.
1158 Dee

Dee is one of mama dogs pups. She gave birth in the forest and we had been unable to find her pups. On the 30th September 2016, three pups followed her out of the forest.  Volunteers Evelyne and Simone were here at the time and helped catch the pups as they were in danger of being run over on the road.  Mama dog is a feral dog who has come to the gate every day for years to be fed. Only recently have we been able to touch her and get a collar on her so we intend to get her spayed so that she doesn't have any more pups. Dee was born around the 10th August 2016.
1157 Henry

Henry is one of mama dogs pups. Henry  was born around the 10th August 2016.
1156 Eloi

Eloi is one of mama dogs pups. Eloi was born around the 10th August 2016.
1155 Wesley
On the 30th September 2016, Liam and Tony spotted Wesley. He was all alone on a road and one of his legs appeared to be broken. They took him straight to the shelter. Wesley was born around March 2016
1154 Leo Bear
The boys had spotted Leo Bear wandering around the town. His coat was very matted, his skin inflamed, he was very thin and also very nervous of people. He had no road sense and was walking in front of cars. Leo Bear's back legs looked deformed or damaged. He couldn't straighten them and was very down on his hocks. On the 29th August 2016 we had spent hours in the morning trying to get him used to us and feed him. Later that day we saw him again walking in front of cars and knew we had to try and get him before he was run over. It took 3 hours to get him into a car as he wasn't trusting and wasn't used to a lead. Leanne and Jess were volunteering at the time and did a great job with Leanne handling him. Leo Bear came back to the house. He stays at the house and is doing well. He is a big friendly boy but has typical karakachan guarding instincts. We think he was born some time in 2013.
475 Courage
Courage was found and rescued on the 2nd November 2012. He was dumped in a remote layby with three other pups. Courage was being bullied by the other pups and had a badly damaged eye which had to be removed. He was born around August 2012. Courage is a lovely boy and very affectionate. He has never been held back by the fact that he only has one eye.
561 Kizzy
Kizzy was rescued on the 11th February 2013. She was one of eight ups that had been dumped with their mother by a fast flowing river. Kizzy was born in January 2013.  She was adopted in Holland but then returned to the shelter in February 2016. She had trouble settling and it was affecting her temperament. The decision was made that Kizzy should come back as she obviously felt more secure in the shelter.

1000 Caleb

Caleb 1000

On the 18th October 2015, we were asked to help a karakachan cross male who was stuck at the side of a river in Smolian. He had been there for at least three or 4 weeks and was very thin with a matted coat. It appeared as if he had fallen or jumped down a wall and couldn’t get back up and was afraid of crossing the water. The lads went to try and help him but he was scared and growled and tried to bite when they got too close. We went back the next day with a cage and eventually caught him by coaxing him into the cage with food. The lads were then able to carry the cage across the river. Once he was away from the river, he wasn’t as scared and when back at the shelter he is allowing people to stroke him. Caleb was very thin and had many cuts and a badly matted coat.

919 Rosie

Rosie (919)

On the 18th april, 2015, Tony saw Rosie when he was driving back from the shelter. Rosie, who looks like a chihauhau cross, was just lay down at the side of a road on a bridge. She wouldn’t have stood a chance against some of the bigger street dogs, so Tony brought her home. Rosie was full of fleas and was very hungry and thirsty. She is very loving with people but didn’t like being near any other dogs and would growl to keep them away. Later that night, Luke spotted another small dog that he had never seen before. After giving him a fuss, the dog followed him home. Rosie and Obie instantly recognized each other and became very excited to be reunited. Obie appears to be younger than Rosie so we suspect he could be her son.  Rosie looks to be approximately two years old.

915 Balkan

On the 20th March 2015, we were asked if we could help Balkan. He was just over three years old and had spent all his life chained up as a guard dog, without any kennel or shelter. Balkan was very thin and neglected and had bald spots due to a flea allergy. He belonged to an old man whose son was going to kill him as he said he was diseased. Balkan was collected by Gergana of In Defense of Animals Vratsa. The next day he was collected by Diana from Plovdiv, who brought him to Rudozem. Everything was strange and overwhelming for him at first, having spent all his life on a chain. Balkan came to the house as there was no room at the shelter. One of his back dew claws was so overgrown that it had grown round in two full circles. He is putting on weight and his hair is growing back. Balkan is very loving with us and with people he knows but now that is feeling stronger it is obvious that he has strong guarding instincts. When people he doesn't know come to the house, introductions have to be made slowly and then he is fine with them.

912 Yoki

On the 21st February 2015, someone posted a picture of Yoki on the fan page and asked if we could help. Yoki was on the streets in Kurdzhali. He was very thin and had lost all his coat with a very severe case of demodex. Annie in Kurdzhali managed to catch him, although he was very scared and she kept him safe over night until we could collect him the next day. He also had a very bad case of tapeworm. Yoki would yelp if anyone made a sudden move or if he bumped in to you. He had obviously been abused. Yoki came to the house as there was no room at the shelter. He stayed in our bedroom and it wasn't long before he found his way on to the bed. Yoki's hair is growing back and he now plays with us. He is very attached to us and isn't happy when people he doesn't know are about. We think Yoki is about five years old.

908 Shannon

Aslan, Ruby and Shannon were in a school yard in Madan. Someone messaged us oon the 13th February 2015, asking if we could help them as two of their siblings had already frozen to death. The pups were scared and tried to get away from us apart from Shannon who was very weak and sick. Aslan, Ruby and Shannon were born around the 20th December 2014.

904 Hailey

Hailey was brought to the shelter on the 7th February 2015 by Kosta's mum and dad. (Kosta is our daughter Kerry's partner). Hailey was born around the 7th November 2014. Kosta's dad found her near his garage. She was alone and very scared and was thin and hungry. Her coat was very dirty and matted. Hailey was so scared that despite being very hungry, she would only eat when everyone left the room. She is in the staff room at the shelter so she will gain confidence around people.

902 Lana

On the 22nd January 2015, Liam found Lana all alone on a mountain road, one night. There were no other pups or a mother anywhere around. It was freezing and she could have frozen or starved to death or been attacked by wild animals. Lana was born around the 12th November 2014. She was very scared when she first arrived but loves the company of the other dogs at the house and is getting more confident around people.

April

On the 2nd December 2014 someone turned up at the shelter with a box of three pups. The boys at the shelter explained that we had no free pens but the people put the box down and drove off. They said they had found the pups at the landfill. There were three little girl pups in the box who were born around the 30th September 2014. All were very scared and thin and hungry but within days they were all coming for a fuss and a cuddle. April is one of the pups.

Skye

Skye

On the evening of the 27th November 2014, Tony found Skye in the town center. She had been with a group of feral dogs and had got left behind. She was afraid as she wasn't used to traffic or people and was hiding under some bushes. Tony managed to get her and brought her back to the house. She will spend time at the house with Angel, Daisy and Foxy, who have been a comfort to hundreds of scared dogs and cats over the years. Hopefully she will soon relax and learn to trust people.  Skye was born around the 1st of September 2014.

Hali

HALI

We were told about two tiny pups in a village in Rudozem. Tony and Tyson went to see them but they were hiding in a storm drain under the road and they couldn’t get near them. On the 14th July someone managed to catch them and brought them to the shelter. There were actually five pups, Hali, Kenya, Llia, Iza and Florrie. They were all terrified of people so we are working to build up their trust and confidence.

Florrie

Ragnar was found in the town on the 5th June 2014. He was very weak, covered in cuts and was stumbling about. He tried to bite out of fear when Tony picked him up to put him in the car. Once back at the house he just stood with his head down facing the wall. His wounds were full of maggots so we had to bath him with permethrin shampoo to get rid of them all. The maggots were also inside his ears which were  badly infected.

Ragnar went to the vets on the 8th June. He was sedated and drains were put in his wounds. Full blood tests were done and everything else was fine apart from signs he was fighting infection (wounds) and slightly anaemic probably due to parasites. Ear drops were given for bacterial infection.

A week later the drains were removed and Ragnar was castrated. Blood test results were all good. Ragnar has gained confidence and is a friendly boy. He enjoys lying on the balcony and sunning himself. Ragnar is about three to four years old.

Khaleesi

KHALEESI

On the 12th May 2014, Tony noticed that someone had posted on the RSDR fan page asking if we could help a dog in another town. The dog was in a terrible state being extremely thin and with severe mange. There was a link to a news article showing pictures of her and they were asking if someone could catch her and put her to sleep as people were worried that she was diseased. We set off to find her and were shocked when we saw her. She was so emaciated, covered in ticks and fleas with complete hair loss and deformed front legs. When Tony called to her, she came over, very submissively and just pushed her head into him.

Khaleesi has had extensive treatment for sarcoptic mange and ehrlichosis and many visits to the vets. Her legs were bandaged for a short time and are now perfectly straight. Her hair is growing back and she should soon have a full coat. Recent blood tests showed that she is now free from infection. She has now developed a papilloma virus which causes wart like growths in and around her mouth. It is hoped that this will just run its course and should go in a matter of months.

Despite her horrible start in life, Khaleesi is a happy girl. She is confident and can be very strong willed at times. She has natural guarding instincts when it comes to her people and property but once she knows someone is allowed in, she wants to make friends with them.

Bonita was rescued on the 26th July 2013. She had been living on the streets for a long time. We had seen her about for about a year and had never been able to get close to her. She had pups on 6th street and children were tormenting her and trying to abuse the pups so she was warning them off. People were going to kill her saying she was aggressive. When rescued she acted aggressively trying to protect her pups but then became a very sweet and loving girl once the lead was on her. Bonita has settled well at the shelter and is a very affectionate girl.

Dutchie

On the 1evening of 3th july 2013, Tony found Dutchie alone in the town center. Dutchie was born around the 20th april 2013.

Marbles

MARBLES

On the 11th April 2013, Tony was out taking the lads home from work when I heard a car sounding its horn outside. I went out and two men were parked in the yard. One opened his boot and handed me a sack with pups inside. He then showed me another sack with pups in. It is one time when I didn't even bother explaining that we have no free pens because the pups were wet, terrified and covered in their own mess. If I hadn't taken them, i don't like to think what would have happened to them. The pups were all thin and absolutely terrified of people. It will take time a patience to get them all to trust. They were born around the 19th February 2013. Marbles is a girl.

Tazzy

TAZZY

We spotted this little girl in the town late afternoon on the 9th April. She was in a panic and had blood on her mouth. We pulled up and she ran under a parked car. Kerry managed to grab her and Tony quickly got her in the cage in the car. She didn't like people at all and put up a fight. Tony put welding gloves on to get her from the car to the cage in the staffroom because she was fighting and biting like a little Tasmanian Devil. We nick named her Tazzy and the name has stuck. At first she would growl and bark if anyone moved in the room and kept up a repetative high pitched bark. By the next day she was slowly coming round to us and just days later she was playing with us and the bigger dogs. She still goes into a panic at any loud noises but she is becoming more confident  every day. Tazzy was born around the 18th February 2013.

Doris

DORIS

Doris was born around the 28th January 2013. She is one of Mary’s pups who was rescued from the roadside on the 18th March 2013.

Milada

MILADA

On the 2nd January 2013, Milada was  brought to the shelter with her 8 young pups. The lady and man had brought leonard, arlo and wendy to us months earlier who were also this dogs pups. Apparently Milada is a Doberman cross who was thrown out as a pup. It had taken the woman over a year to gain her trust enught to get a collar and lead on her and bring her to us. Children in the village had been throwing stones at mum and pups and already killed one of the pups. Milada is extremely scared and untrusting of people.

Selena

SELENA

22 January 2013.

We received a number of e mails and messages asking us if we could help a mum and her pups near the grounds of Smolian hospital. Each time we had to apologise to people and explain that we had nowhere to put them and with some of our pups having an infection and us not having an isolation unit we were worried that pups we take in could be at risk if they didn’t already have an infection themselves.

On the 21st January I received more e mails from someone saying one of the pups had been hit by a car and the driver didn’t even try and avoid it and that another pup was already missing . The mum was spending more time away from the pups and at times not even feeding them when she did go back. The lady begged us to go and help them and said even if they risked getting an infection at the shelter, at least they stood some chance whereas they didn’t where they were.

We set off to Smolian and Savvina who had contacted me, met us there with her boyfriend Julien.

I managed to grab one pup before they all went down an underground hole that they had been living in. We tried moving back and keeping quiet in the hope that they would come back out. Tony heard another pup cry from another direction. We followed the cries and found that one pup had fallen down a pipe which was about 8 feet below ground level. Julien climbed down and luckily he managed to grab the little girl pup before she went off down one of the drains. Julien passed the pup up and then Tony had to help pull him out as only his hands could reach above the ground. Near to where this pup had got stuck I saw another very deep hole with another of the pups dead at the bottom of it.

The other pups weren’t going to come out of their hole so eventually Tony went through the gap on his stomach. It went back a fair way and with Julien behind Tony you could only see Julien’s feet sticking out. Tony grabbed the pups, passed them back to Julien who in turn passed them out to Savvina and I. It was made even more difficult by the fact that the pups were so scared and trying to bite.

Once we had all the pups safe in a cage, we went looking for their mum. We did eventually find her but she was so nervous of people that she was trying to attack if she felt trapped. There is no way that we could have got her without risking serious injury to ourselves. It is sad that we had to take the pups and leave the mum but she was spending little time with them and very soon she would stop going back to them at all. A lady at a nearby shop said that she puts food out for her and that some of the taxi drivers who wait near the hospital also feed her and they would all look out for her.

The seven pups we brought back were all full of worms and fleas and some were very aneamic. One of them was so weak that he didn’t survive.

Baldwin

BALDWIN

On the 31st January 2013 we were asked to help 10 very young pups who were behind a factory. They were very close to a fast flowing river and workers were worried that the pups were now starting to wander about and they would either fall in the river and drown or else get run over.

When we arrived, it was obvious that the pups were from two separate litters. Three of them were very tiny and only about 3 weeks old the other seven pups aren’t much older but are bigger as they appear to be karakachan crosses. All the pups are in a very poor condition and had severe infestation of worms and fleas. Baldwin is one of the older pups rescued that day. He is a karakachan cross born around the 25th December 2012.

Arlo

ARLO

Arlo was brought to the shelter with her brother and sister on the 25th october 2012. We were told that they had found the pups but don't think that is likely as they wouldn't have been able to catch them. They were all terrified of people. Arlo's sister and brother are more confident than she is and now come for a fuss. Arlo will get there but is taking a little longer to trust people. she was born around the 12th July 2012.

Leonard

LEONARD

Leonard was brought to the shelter with his two sisters on the 25th october 2012. We were told that they had found the pups but don't think that is likely as they wouldn't have been able to catch them. They were all terrified of people. Leonad was in a very poor condition and his tummy was very swollen with worms. After just a few weeks leonard has got used to people and comes for a fuss. We will continue working with him and hopefully he will soon be confident enough to be adopted. Leonard was born around the 12th july 2012.

Zorro

ZORRO

On the 12th august 2012 we saw a little black pup running about the middle of the road. When we stopped and got out of the car, he ran off screaming. We followed him and Tony managed to catch him. He was identical to Kissinger who had been found previously in the same area so we are certain that they are brothers. Zorro was very skinny and hungry. he was terrified of people but it didn't take him long to come round to people. he is now happily sharing a pen with other pups.

Bootle

BOOTLE

17th July 2012.

We have been feeding the mum of these pups for months now whenever we see her but she still won't come anywhere near us. We have to put food down and back away. She had kept her pups hidden somewhere away from the town center. Unfortunately they have reached the age where they will follow her to search for food. When this happens the pups get lost, scared and left behind and really don't stand a c...hance of surviving on their own.

Tony and the boys went in to town today and were met by a scene of chaos. All of these pups had got sperated from their mum and were getting split up from each other in their panic. Not used to people or cars, they were just running about screaming. there was no option but to try and catch the pups. Tony, liam, Luke and Yavka managed to catch 8 pups with the help of two guys in the town. All the pups are very scared of people so it will take time, love and patience before they learn to trust. Bootle is a girl born around the 25th may 2012.

Baz

BAZ

Baz was found by luke on the 12th July 2012. He was alone one night in the town center and started following Luke. Baz was born around the 25th April 2012.

Nita

NITA

Nita was rescued from the forest as a young pup in February 2011. It took a while to gain her trust but she soon became a very loving girl. Nita was adopted in June 2011. Unfortunately it turned out that as she got older she had a high prey instinct and couldn't be let off a lead. Her new owners had issues with this and decided it was suggested that she should be put to sleep. We immediately said that Nits should come back to us. she came back to Bulgaria in April 2012. Nita is a bit nervous around people she doesn't know but immediately recognised all of our family and was very pleased to see us. Nita was born around the 20th December 2010.

Nayeli

NAYELI

Nayeli was born around october 2011. He was a street dog living with a group of other dogs, that we would feed every day. All the dogs were very scared and wouldn't come anywhere near us. Eventually the group of dogs split and others went their seperate ways. Nayeli seemed to be unwell and would stay in the same place on his own. I managed to give him antibiotics hidden in food and eventually with the absence of canine compnay he started coming to me for a fuss. We eventually coaxed him into the van on the 12th May 2012. We had a terrible time getting him from the van to a pen as he was so scared that he was biting anything in front of him. it is early days with him and there is a lot of work ahead but he is pleased to see us and is slowly learning to trust.

Pom Pom

POM POM

Pom Pom was brought to the shelter on the 12th May 2012. She had four tiny pups who were less than 10 days old and didn't even have their eyes open. The man that brought them here told us to kill them if we couldn't keep them or he would kill them. Pom Pom is a lovely girl when away from her pups but very protective when she is with them.

Tika

TIKA

On the 21st April 2012, a couple turned up at the shelter in the evening asking if we could take a dog. We explained that we were sorry but had no room and no spare pens. At 9pm a car was outside repeatedly blasting its horn. Tony went out to see who it was and  it was the same people who just left the dog and drove off without saying a word. Tika was born around the 17th December making her about four and a half months. She had a collar on which was much too tight. She is a lovely natured girl and very friendly with people and other dogs.

Kazan

KAZAN

While we were waiting for transport to pick up our adopted dogs on the 23 February 2012, we were all inside having a cup of tea inside, to our surprise when we went out again we found 5 pups in a box by the gate. Kazan is a little boy, born 2nd February 2012.

Pauline

PAULINE

Soyala and her nine pups were rescued on the 10th January 2012. She was trying to fend for herself and her nine tiny pups whilst there was 3 foot of snow. One of the pups had become stuck where snow and ice had frozen around it. Soyala was very thin and scared and covered in cuts. She has now started to gain confidence and wags her tail when she sees us. The pups are all very loveable and friendly and are doing well. They were born around the 30th November 2011.

Lonnie

LONNIE

Lonnie was born here on the 25th November 2011. Her mother is Nina, a lovely natured girl who we rescued from the streets. Nina was ear tagged which meant she had supposedly been spayed.

Freeman

FREEMAN

This poor boy was just left at the shelter on the 9th december 20ll. He was very dirty, very thin and scared. When we managed to get close enough we found that he had a thick chain round his nexk with his hair all entwined in it and fastend with wire. The man who left him said that he had owned Freeman since he was a pup and he had spent the last five years chained up, never seeing anyone or any other dogs. Freeman was born in 2006. His behaviour is rather strange and he just doesn't connect with people at all but seems to be happy enough in his own world.

Quinty

QUINTY

Quinty was born around November 2010. We found him on the 4th December 2011. He was left tied up to our van when it was parked up in the town centre. He is a karakachan cross and quite a large dog. Quinty soon settled and is a very ougoing and playful boy.

Puddin

PUDDIN

On the 7th october 2011, we got up to find that five little pups had been left in a box near the shelter gate. the pups were born around the 28th august. They all appeared to be fine and are very friendly. Puddin is a little girl.

Jigger

JIGGER

30th september 2011. We had been asked if we could take a mother dog and her pups from a factory. We had no free pens so the intention was to go and just feed and check on them all. On arriving at the factory we saw that the mother dog had an old break to one of her back legs which had healed twisted and she is unable to use it. She was very thin and we were informed that she had recently been shot and that people were regularly trying to shoot her. Her six pups were scattered all over the yard and were in a very bad way. One pup was unable to lift his head due to an injury to his neck or spine and a seventh pup had already died. We had no choice but to take them and make room for them. All the pups were covered in fleas and had to be bathed as soon as we got them back. The pups are gradually getting stronger although some have had to be treated for an infection.

Oliver

OLIVER

Oliver was found by the side of the road with his litter mates on the 29th september. All the pups were very scared of people, very thin and covered in fleas. The pups were born around the 16th august 2011. It didn't take them long to make friends with us.

Connor

CONNOR

In August 2011 we took in three pups. They were brought to us by three men in a van. We explained to the men that we really didn't have anymore room for the dogs, They opened the back door of the van to show Tony. To his horror the dogs were tied up with wire to the point that they were choking and out of fear all three of them wet themselves and soiled themselves. Tony jumped into the back of the van and had to make temporary muzzles out of a lead as they were trying to bite,  they were so scared. They were stick thin and covered in cuts aswell as being riddled with fleas and having bellies full of worms.

Connor is now at the shelter. He is healthy and happy enough with other dogs but doesn't like or trust people and will never be available for adoption.

Dot

Dot escaped from the garden soon after arriving. She would however break back into the garden on a regular basis and always knew where to come for food and water every day. Many times we have tried to keep her in but each time she escapes again. Despite our best efforts, dot still doesn't let us touch her but she is well fed and regularly wormed and treated for fleas via her food.

Dusty

Dusty, Dot and Connor never came round to people despite our best efforts. We did manage to coax Dusty in to a cage with food and moved her to the shelter. She still doesn't let anyone touch her and will never be available for adoption.

Casey

CASEY

28 July 2011 --  A  poor mother dog and her 5 tiny pups were dumped in the middle of the road. Tony was going for more wood to build pens when he saw her cowering in the middle of the road with her babies around her. A man said she had just been dumped from a car and was frozen with fear. The mother dog couldn't put one of her back legs down and drops to the floor if you try and touch her but makes no attempt to bite.

Casey is one of her pups.

Arnold

ARNOLD

10 September 2011

Arnold turned up in Rudozem when he was dumped after being caught and castrated in another town. Kerry saw him one day and he followed her into the post office, since then he has followed Kerry whenever he sees her. Latley he has started living outside Kerry and Kostas appartment, barking all night to get Kerrys attention. This didn't go down very well with neighbours and we were concerned that someone would shoot him. We brought him to the shelter where he would be safe. He has now got used to other people and been microchipped and vaccinated.

Bigdog

BIGDOG

20 August 2008  -   About five or six weeks ago a dog just turned up outside our house. He had a collar on but no one knew where he had come from or had seen him before. We presumed he was after Lulah, one of the dogs we have taken in, as she hasn’t yet been spayed. We thought if we didn’t feed or encourage him then he would go in a day or so. We then got worried when he started following any of us if we went out anywhere. I knew if it was just Lulah he was interested in then he would have stayed outside the house. I referred to him as "Bigdog" thinking if I didn’t give him a name, we might not get attached to him. That is a bit difficult when he started chasing after us if we went anywhere in the car, then would be there to greet us when we got home.

He caused problems when I took the goats out as he was trying to get the baby goat. We called the police but they weren't interested. Someone had to hold him to make sure he didn’t follow whoever took the goats out. One day I took them into the forest on my own. Bigdog suddenly appeared and I was worried he was going to attack the baby goat. However he didn’t bother the goats but would not leave my side that day. There happened to be a guy we didn't know in our forest plot cutting grass. It might have been a coincidence but It did make me feel safer knowing that Bigdog was next to me.

Weeks have passed and he is still here night and day. We cant let him in the garden because of the other dogs and we don’t want to risk a fight. It isn’t too bad at the moment while the weather is warm but the worry is what will happen when it turns cold. There is also the added worry that people will start tormenting him and hurting him, even shooting him. The poor dog is also terrified of thunder. I had to bring him in the porch a couple of weeks ago when we had a torrential storm. He stood, trembling with his head pushed into me. I don’t know what he would have done if he had been left out in it.

Bigdog eventually got his own way and moved in and became a permanent resident.

Anastasia

ANASTASIA

In april 2011 we were asked if we could go and collect a small pup that had been terribly abused. Anastasia was on the streets and a man was threatening to kill her and other dogs. The dogs were all terrified and it was only because the man had smashed and broken Anastasia's leg that a caring lady called Elena managed to catch her. Poor little Anastasia was so thin and hungry when we collected her and was scared and in a lot of pain. she would try and bite anyone who went near her. We took her to the vets and she had an operation to repair her broken leg. Despite her leg being pinned, Anastasia can now run and play with the other pups and dogs. She wants to be friends and will run up behind you and lick you but isn't brave enough to be stroked when you are facing her. She will probably never be confident enough to be adopted but she is happy and safe and has lots of company.

Misty

MISTY

Misty appeared in Rudozem as a very young and untrusting dog. She was obviously hungry and the boys threw food to her. For days she would follow them about and wait outside the house each night for them. Despite this it was weeks before she would let them touch her. A lady in the town centre recognized her and rang her owner who was from a town 28km away. She phoned the person who she thought Misty belonged to and was told that they no longer wanted her and had thrown her out and to give her to the boys she was following. We were very short of space and it was a struggle to take in any more dogs. We had no choice but to take Misty in as she was in serious danger of being shot after she had been killing hens around Rudozem . She also had no road sense and had been hit by a car.

She has serious trust issues and it was months before she would settle with anyone else once the boys went out without her.  She is still very wary of people she doesn’t know but has now accepted all family members.  We belive she was born around January 2008.

Brownie

BROWNIE

Brownie is very timid. She had lived all her life on the streets or forest without any human contact.  She came to rely on us for food but would always wait until we backed away before she would touch the food we left by our gate for her. Eventually we managed to coax her through the gate with food. Brownie will jump up at us for a fuss but still has serious trust issues and isn't suitable for adoption. Brownie first turned up near our house in October 2009 but it was March 2010 before we managed to get her in.

Hana

HANA

Hana is one of three little girl pups that were wandering on the roads when Tony found her and brought her home on June 9th 2010.  RSDR had to build another pen as they had no room to put them. all the pups were very scared of people when we brought them home. hana's two sisters came round to people and were later adopted but Hana is still very nervous and may never be suitable for adoption.

Sadie

SADIE

Sadie was born around September 2009. she was a young dog when we first spotted her in early 2010. She was living in the forest and would only venture out to look for scraps. At the first sign of anyone, she would run back to the forest so for months we were unable to feed her. After many months, she would eat the food we put down if we backed away. Every time we saw Sadie she was looking thinner and weaker but if we tried to get close to her she would growl. Often we wouldn't be able to find her for days or even weeks and after seeing how weak she was, we were worried that she had died. One night in June 2010, we went out looking for her and found her half collapsed behind a bin. It was as if she had made up her mind that she needed help. she staggered over to me and put her head on my knee and just let out a tiny whimper when Tony lifted her up and put her in the van. Sadie grew to trust us and is now a strong healthy girl who is very loyal and protective.

Robin

ROBIN

Robin was found in July 2010 when he was just five weeks old. His mother was a ferral dog who had given birth to her pups up a mountain. the pups had started trying to follow their mother down the mountain when she went looking for food. they were in danger of falling or being killed on the busy road at the bottom. Robin was very scared and still has serious trust issues which has meant he cannot be available for adoption.

Hercules

HERCULES

Hercules is a Karakachan. He is approximately 6 or 7 years old. He spent all his life protecting a flock on a mountain road until he was replaced by a younger dog and driven away. Hercules was never socialised with people and would try and attack any car that even slowed down near his flock. It took a long time for us to get close enough to feed him. Eventually he started to trust Tony and would come to him for food. We were worried about him being on the streets as he would still attack any cars that drove to slowly near him and did not appear to like or trust any other than Tony. Tony managed to get him to follow him home, so he is now safe with us. He has now accepted me (Diane), but still has to accept the rest of the family. We have to be very careful with him as he has now accepted our home as his territory and acts very aggressively towards anyone walking past the house or even neighbours that he sees in their own gardens. He has now let us put a collar on him. He needs time and patience with every little thing that we do with him which is what we have always given him. Hercules has been with us since August 2010. He has accepted liam and luke now but still can't be trusted with anyone else.

Acorn

ACORN

Acorn was found with his sister Nova in July 2010 when they were about 8 weeks old. The two tiny pups were hiding under a building in the town centre. They were both terrified of people and it took a long time for them to get used to us. Acorn has been vaccinated and microchipped. He is a happy affectionate boy but can still be quite timid.

Nova

NOVA

Nova was found with her brother Acorn in July 2010 when they were about 8 weeks old. The two tiny pups were hiding under a building in the town centre. They were both terrified of people and it took a long time for them to get used to us.  Nova has been vaccinated, microchipped and spayed. She is very loving when she gets to know someone but is still timid around people that she doesn't know.

Shyanne

SHYANNE

Shyanne has been with us since September 2010. We found her with her brother Roma and sister Lisa on a road outside a factory. The people in the factory had been feeding them but asked us to try and find homes for them. They are all lovely natured dogs and have all been with us for a long time now. One day they hope they will be adopted and have their own forever homes.

George

GEORGE

George was rescued by a British couple Bron and Karl. They noticed the dog near to where they lived and took him in when they discovered that he had been shot. George had also had his ears cut off which leads us to believe he was intended for fighting or as a guard dog.  George came to us in october 2010. Once he knows someone he is very loving but can act very agressively towards people that he doesn't know.

Shumba

SHUMBA

Shumba came to us in December 2010 when he was just a small pup. His mother was a ferral dog that had given birth in someone's shed. someone moved the pups to the forest when they were just three weeks old. The pups had made their home in a hole in a bank and were very difficult to catch. some local boys caught them and brought them to us. Despite living in the house with us and being with us for quite some time, Shumba was never very confident around people. he now lives at the shelter with other young dogs and although he will come to us for a fuss, he gets very distressed when anyone new is around or there is any change in his environment. Shumba may never be confident enough to be able to go up for adoption.
