25th February (Rudozem)
Today we collected a litter of pups that we have been keeping an eye on since they were born. They are only three weeks old and their mother is a feral dog who won't let people get anywhere near her. We were asked by someone to take the pups away when they were just a day old. We explained that the soonest we would take them would be at 3 weeks old. The pups had started to walk about and there was the danger that local children might start messing with them. Last night it rained all night and today it turned to snow again. We decided it was best to get the pups now before someone decides to move or kill them.
Liam and Luke are still with Kerry and Kosta but their friends Tyson and Stasik went with Tony to get the pups. All the pups are girls.
The mother of the pups is totally feral. The first sight of a person and she is off into the forest. The only way anyone will ever catch her is if they are a good shot with a tranquiliser gun. As I have said before, we don't have a vet in or near Rudozem that can spay females. The nearest one would be a 10 hour round trip and even then they do not know how to do the neuter/release method for spaying, which would mean that any female would have to go back for stitches removed after 10 days. The whole point of neuter/release is to return animals as soon as possible to the area that they are familiar with. There is no way that we could take a wild animal. keep her caged for 10 days and then return her to the forest. It would be dangerous for us, unfair to her and we just don't have the facilities.
At the moment we are just trying to do the best with what we have and this is an example of why we are so desperate to get the building renovated and set up as a shelter/clinic so that we can have volunteer vets to neuter/release and show local vets the procedure.
