Bennie, Boogie, Samba and Malik were all found at the side of the road. These pups must have been incubating an infection as they all became ill. Despite our best efforts we lost Boogie, Bennie and Samba on the 3rd april. Although we do our best to keep new pups and dogs seperate from the other dogs, it isn't always possible. Until we get a new roof and can renovate, we don't have a special quarantine area. When we take in nearly 30 pups in one month, we just have to put them in pens according to size and age. Unfortunately some of the other pups did become ill and we now have 21 pups on a 5 day course of antibiotics. Most of these pups are happy, active and eating well but we cannot take chances. Oakley and Bob were very sick. Oakley has amazed us all as she was always tiny and it really hit her hard. She was so thin and weak that at one point we didn't think she would make it through the night. A couple of days ago we strted treating her with a different antibiotic and yesterday she did start to nibble at food so we are hoping she will make a full recovery. We will keep her and Bob apart from the other pups until they are stronger and have re-gained some of their weight.
It is always hard at times like this. Emotions are all over the place when there is the heartbreak of losing one and then the highs when a sick pup starts to pick up and eat again. RIP Bennie, Boogie and Samba.
